TD*X Associates Pilot Testing Services

TD*X has designed and operated full scale thermal desorption units (TDUs) since 1987.  These units have set benchmarks for contaminant removal, air emissions, productivity and cost performance each time that they have been used.  In total, these units have processed over 300,000 tons of hazardous waste and PCB contaminated soil and sludge since 1992.  For this work, TD*X staff had the following responsibilities:

Pilot Test Lab

In the pilot lab, samples are subjected to a rigorous testing protocol in specialized equipment. This is done to establish the required treatment conditions for full-scale operation. Pilot testing yields by far the most accurate result for potentially expensive waste treatment or site remediation. This is particularly valuable to both the site’s owner and the remediation contractor. Focused, reliable and specific treatment conditions are determine that yield optimal performance. High confidence that these conditions can be reproduced in the field mean for reduced performance risk and consequently lower price and schedule contingency. TD*X uses the USEPA thermal desorption pilot testing treat ability study protocol, which our staff members helped to write. Testing is performed on five to ten gallon size samples of contaminated solids in a pilot thermal desorption unit. These tests can normally be performed the same week that the sample is received at the lab, with results available within one to three weeks, depending on the desired analytical laboratory turn-around-time. Total project costs are approximately the same as the much less accurate “static tray test” protocol that is used by many other thermal treatment technology providers and test labs alike.

Pilot test lab is permitted for:

  • Hazardous waste regulated under RCRA
  • Polychlorinated biphenyl’s (PCBs) regulated under TSCA
  • Non-hazardous contaminated soils, sediments and solids
  • Foreign and U.S. Territory soil restricted by USDA soil quarantine regulations

Field Pilot Demonstration Testing

  • Two-trailer thermal desorption system with indirect heated primary treatment unit and condensation and recovery style gas treatment system
  • Mobile unit that can be installed in five days on a properly prepared site
  • Previous work involves operations on:
    • TSCA regulated PCB contaminated soil
    • RCRA regulated contaminated soils contaminated by solvents, and oils with lead contamination (D009) at levels up to 7%
    • RCRA regulated listed waste sludge’s from oil refinery operations (K048-K052)
    • Radioactive and hazardous waste (mixed waste) sludge’s from waste water treatment

Previous Permitted Operations:

  • RCRA waste treatment under Part A modification
  • Radioactive material treatment under USDOE radiological protection procedures and administrative orders in accordance with the Atomic Energy Act
  • PCB contaminated soil treatment under TSCA R&D permit
  • RCRA waste treatment at fully permitted Part B site under RD&D permit
  • New Source air permit under strict California state regulations

Trailer mounted small pilot thermal desorption system with indirect heated primary treatment unit and condensation and recovery style gas treatment system

  • Mobile unit that can be installed in one day
  • Previous work involves operations on:
    • TSCA regulated PCB contaminated soil

TD*X Thermal Desorption Equipment is Capable of Processing:

  • Contaminated soil, sediments, solids, debris
  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s)
  • trichloroethene (trichloroethylene or TCE),
  • tetrachloroethene (tetrachloroethylene, perchloroethylene, “perc”, or PCE)
  • benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, xylene (BTEX)
  • hazardous waste solvents (F001, F002, F003, F004, F005)
  • flammable solids or flammable liquid contaminated solids
  • Semi-Volatile Organic Compounds (SVOC’s)
  • pesticides and herbicides
  • poly nuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and similar waste from the operation of manufactured gas plants
  • pentachlorophenol and similar waste from wood preserving operations (listed hazardous waste code F027)
  • organic dyes and dye intermediates: aniline, dichlorobenzidene
  • polychlorinated dibenzodioxins (dioxin), and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (furans)
